KWedge is a PC software used by government organizations and businesses to transmit data securely from a barcode scanner to a business application on the PC. In secure environments where wireless data transmission is not permitted, KWedge can be a solution for PCs to securely retrieve data from a mobile barcode scanner and transmit the data to a target application on the PC including Maximo, VistA, Excel and more. KWedge is a required software for devices such as the CT45 Scanner in use at VA Medical Centers.
Several iterations of KWedge have been released over the years as barcode scanner technology has evolved. Refer to the Version Info tab confirm which version of KWedge is needed for specific scanner models.
KWedge 8 was released in May 2025 which includes several new features including creating a backup copy of transmitted data and adding functionality for moving large lookup files from the PC to the scanner in SQL format.
KWedge 8 retains all of the key functionalities of KWedge 7.0 with several enhancements to improve the user experience and to support future devices running newer versions of the Android operating system.
KWedge 8 Improvements
Faster Processing of Large Inventory Files
This feature is especially helpful to resolve issues where VistA will time out when transferring large inventory files.
Retains Last Target
KWedge 8 will retain the last target application (e.g. Vista or Maximo) when launching the application. KWedge 7 would only retain the last target application if set by the PC’s administrator. Therefore, KWedge 8 can have its target set by the local User without requiring OI&T for assistance.
Backup of Inventory Files
KWedge 8 will automatically create a backup copy of the inventory file on the user’s PC. This can prevent the user from needing to scan the inventory again if the user believes the data has been lost.
Ready Indicators
KWedge 8 introduces ready indicators for the first time which lets the user know if a) the target application has been selected, b) if the PC can see the scanner, and c) if the scanner has an inventory file ready to be transferred.
USB Communicator
USB Communicator is a new application used for transferring database files from the PC to the scanner for the purpose of lookups. The mobile printing function on the scanner requires database files to be transferred via USB Communicator.
